Abstract

This study aims to systematically examine the concept of sabr (patience) in Islamic teaching and its implications for the professional resilience of midwives in Indonesia. Burnout and psychological distress among midwives have become critical concerns in the Indonesian health system, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic. While existing literature addresses religiosity as a general coping mechanism, specific elaboration on sabr as an integrated psychospiritual foundation for midwifery professionalism remains scarce. This research employs a systematic literature review (SLR) design with qualitative thematic analysis. A total of 143 studies were identified across five databases (PubMed, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, EBSCOhost, ProQuest); after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 15 studies were included for final thematic analysis. Three major themes emerged: (1) sabr as a theological-psychological construct in Islamic tradition; (2) the relevance of sabr to the emotional and ethical demands of midwifery practice; and (3) implications of sabr for burnout prevention and professional resilience. Findings indicate that sabr functions as a multidimensional coping resource encompassing cognitive, emotional, and spiritual regulation. The integration of this value into midwifery education curricula and mental wellness programs is proposed as a concrete contribution toward building resilient and compassionate health professionals in the Indonesian Muslim context.
